If it is a new laptop it may not have the same specs as the machine you are comparing it to (the one with XP) The computer with XP may even have a faster CD-ROM which is capable of reading the disk faster and making it quicker to copy files.

Check the specs on both machines right click my computer and click properties and see if the one with XP has a faster processor or more RAM. That might be the case and it might not be Vista.

I just got a new Toshiba laptop with Vista with more than twice the RAM of my old computer and it's lightning fast compared to my old one when copying files.

There were an article on slow file copying on Vista to a LAN, but I heard that many had problems too copying to local drives, so far I have not seen a real solution.
