Yes it REALLY hurts. When mine first started, it felt like I was getting really bad period cramps. I thought thats what it was for the first 2 or 3 hours until the nurse hooked me up to the monitor and saw that I was actually having contractions. Those first contractions before my water broke were pretty managable, but after my water broke I was in horrible pain! It felt like someone was taking my uterus and squeezing it soooo hard. It's just a really uncomfortable, tense, crampy, pressure feeling.

it is a pain that is the worst natural pain a person can endure in their life. at least that is what i hear it has been compared to. when i was in labor the contractions felt as if you were slowly being ripped apart. i remember when they gave me the epideral they had a window where i felt everything on my right side and nothing on the left. as the labor progressed my body started naturally pushing. imagine you have food poison and no matter how hard you try to stop vommiting it just keeps comming. there is nothing that can be done to stop it. when i was pushing my daughters head came out but i got tired and her head sunk back in. i got her out in 12 pushes but the doctor gave me an episiomity. where they slice you. the most escrusiating part was when they pulled her shoulders out. believe it or not the pushing is more of a releif. some people compare it to having to go number two and when you are pushing your body is feeling relief. i would have to agree with that theory. as soon as the baby comes out and you go through that burst of pain where your whole body felt like a bomb ripped you open all the pain stops. at least it did for me. then they stitch you up. that is certainly not pleasent. i blew all the blood vessels in my face where it was all black and blue. my eyes were blood shot as well. they had to insert a cafider because i was not able to get out of the bed.. the good thing about the labor is it is not pro longed. 14 hours is typical for a first time mother. but what comes after. you are very sore for about 6 weeks. you have to use a spray because it burns to urinate.the lack of sleep because your constantly worried about the baby.some women experience severe swelling. i sure did. my ankles were swollen and my legs. my husband had to help me out of the car and i could barley walk. also after giving birth constipation is an issue. another annoying thing about labor is they do not allow you any thing to drink or to eat. the eating did not bother me but not having a drink sure did. all i wanted was some water. well any ways in the end as soon as you see your child all of that was completley worth it. children are definatly gods greatest gift.

Contractions feel like bad period cramps and it's a tightening uncomfortable feeling.
The epidural hurt and I'm horrible with needles and have a very low pain tolerance but once it kicked in, it was better
Pushing wasn't painful with it, but it sucked as I pushed for 3 hours till I got the baby out, it was very hard to hold your breath for 10 seconds over and over again....
If I can make it, anyone could, I'm a big wimp with pain and needles
Hope this helps some :-)
Congrats and good luck!

Yes it hurts Thank God for the epidural and if you are pregnant don't let someone say natural child birth means no med the best way no to hurt is to help you body relax and this is one of them Natural just means no c section Forces relaxation is the hardest thing to do This is experience talking once again YES it hurts only very few women go w/o pain

When I was pregnant with my son 24 years ago, my sweet little 4'10" devout Quaker grandmother who never swore asked me if I was afraid of labor and childbirth.
I told her that I wasn't afraid, just wondering what it would be like.
She looked over her glasses and without missing a beat said, "honey, it's like trying to sh*t a watermelon."
Dear Mamaw Helen, so wise....

I wouldn't know, ask again in three months and I'll tell you! But by what everyone else has said, I'm just taking a wild guess that it feels like period cramps. Man..I'm a little scared now.

i dunno, LOL i walked into the OB's office for a routine visit at 35 weeks, and found out i was already dialated to 7!! Sometimes it sneaks up on you! The contractions are painful when you notice them LOL. But when its time to push it feels good, it takes the pain out of the contractions. and it just feels natural. Contractions do not always have to hurt to cause your cervix to change.

It feels like real bad cramps and you can't ball up because the doctors have monitors on the baby and that's irritating. They come fast and hard.
