not a good idea,it will cook your starter,then you're screwed!

Yes, I have tried to start my car after it was already on, as have most people at one point or another. The high pitched grind you may have heard when doing this is due to the starter engine's drive pinion being clutched with the drive shaft. Because the drive engine of the car runs faster than the starter engine, once it has started, the pinion is not allowed to clutch with the drive shaft after engine ignition. This essentially stops the starter engine from exceeding it's maximum rotational speed.

who hasnt done that. i think ive done it last weekend when i went to visit my girlfriend. we were going to hoss's steakhouse for supper. with my hearing problem sometimes its hard for me to tell if the cars running or not. sometimes i forget that its on and i turn the crank i get a errnt grining noise and im like 'oops, its already started'.

ROFL.. oh yes I have..On one of my cars the engine tho it is a v8..it is super quite.. Maybe I am getting older and just can not hear it anymore lol.. my son laughs and says what are you doing mom its already on.. Keke..ohhh whoooooops..

I do it more on my parents cars, you know the new cars that run so quiet you can actually forget its already on

every once in a while, my car is really quiet so I don't know if it's on. lately i just press the gas pedal and if the rev's go up i know its already on

A friend of mine who has a Prius said she does that weekly now--because the engine idles so quietly it is easy to forget that it is running.
