If you are in the US, try a deed search at your local court house. If the thought of that is a bit much.. Title abstractors do this kind of work everyday for mortgage closings ect. They are listed in the phone book. Their service is not free, but it would give you a clear history of ownership.

County auditor should have your deed on record, then you just go back through the years from there. All these records should be in the same office. If your house is old, some of these records will be on microfiche. The people in your auditor's office should help you with this research. It is interesting if you are into history. If not and you have the money, you can pay someone else, like a local geneaologist, to do the research for you.

The local history society. The local newspaper(s) in the local public library. Maybe the real estate records in the local courthouse.
