It could be a couple things. There are a lot of moving parts on the bottom that make the thing work. Usually the belt is slipping and makes a indescribable smell. I'd start by inspecting the belt tun it over and turn it on to see if the belt is actually moving or if the rotor is just spinning and rubbing the belt. Or it could be the motor or even a string or object that is lodged in there and causing friction. If it is new it should still be under warranty but all vacuum cleaners will have regular maintenance like replacing belts most of all. It is very simple can you post what type of Vacuum cleaner you have we may find something if we have specifics. If it is not one of the parts that need replacing try some of those fresh scents to go in the vacuum.
They even have hepa filter bags that clean the air of allergens.

Defiantly check the belt and make sure the beater brush in the nozzle is turning freely - even a tiny pebble and stop it and cause the belt to burn and smell. You can do several things - get some carpet fresh powder in a scent you like and make a little pile on a hard floor or tile and suck that up - it should help to 'mask' the stale smell. Clean out the dirt thing - if it has a bag replace it, if its a bagless good old soap, water and elbow grease. I would NOT recommend using carpet freshening powder on carpet! It is a small grit that the vacuum cannot pick up all of and the grit will filter below the carpet destroying the padding and the carpet, plus when you clean the carpet this fine powder will turn to mush when it gets wet and mat the carpet down, ruin the wood sub-floor and generally be icky and nasty.

Knowing the type of smell would help. Also is it an upright? Does it have a hose? If it isn't mechanical, belt, beater brush. Could there be something caught along the way??? Food or? Lay the vacuum flat if it's an upright release handle and check for a blockage. Mine has a hose that it goes through first. I use a broom stick if something gets stuck. You can also use another vacuum (shop vac is great). If it's not that...change the bag, vacuum and change again. I also toss potpourri on the floor to make the house smell good. They also sell tablets that you can buy. If it's brand new I would also be looking at returning it for an unstinky one~~~

First see if you need a new bag or to empty out the collection area. Rather than baking soda at the food store in the cleaning area they should have stuff you can shake on your floor then vacuum up. Mom did this once and it smelled good for a few weeks after too each time she vaccumed.

My mom had the same problem. If you have a filter on your vacuum, you have to remove it and clean it very well. You are on the right track with the baking soda. After the filter is dust free (as mush as possible) place it in a bag with a whole box of baking soda for at least two days. Should freshen it right up.

Make sure you clean your vacuum after each use especially if you are vacuuming pet hair as it will smell. Continue to use baking soda and/or use a liquid air freshener mixed with water and lightly spray carpet prior to vacuuming. Or use Fabreze as an example.

Air cirulation is best for your issue, but not the air conditioner! Fresh air from outside. I personally swear by Febreeze products, but you have to choose the RIGHT scent for your "surrounding smells"... 1. You have dogs, they smell right? Put them/keep them outside as much as possible. Discourage thier playing on the furniture and carpet Get NATURES MIRACLE powder for carpet, and pet spray. Bursh/bathe them often, if you decide not to kik them out. PS: If you are sensitive, please open a few windows... For the HOUSE, in general, try NOT to use frilly scents. Stick to citrus or fresh (think Pinesol or Clorox lemon...). Those are natural scents that aid in eliminating stale or unfresh odors. Not to mention its better than inhaling "flower bouquet" for the rest of the day, HA! After a through cleaning, including vaccum and wipe-downs, it should be smelling a bit better. 2.Now, look around you...is there anything left unclen? Poeple are not aware of how dust and air particles contribute to a smelly house. Dusting and wiping is important, especially w/pets. Overtime, dust can bring on a wat I call "air-vent smell", cuza how most a/c filters smell after a long time - dusty! Also, a clean house includes furniture and clothing - those are other sources of funk! You are almost finished! The house is clean and dust free, and the dogs are outside (hopefully). Now enhance your new clean smell with a scent you wouldnt mind for a while. Start with a oil/liquid plug-in port. I would put one nearest the door (but outta sight), in the kitchen, and one behind your bed. The heat created while plugged in will activate the oil and it will begin to float around in a day or so. For an immediate smell, look to Febreeze, it REALLY does work. 3. I dont recommend iol burners, candles, or incense, cuza your pets and they are fire hazards. But if you do, get you some Butt Naked, Sex on the BEach, or Blacc Love oil/incense and you will be DROWNING in the light yet sultry scents of Mother Africa! I hope all I have listed helps. These are things I have learend and taught myself over the years. Since apt. #1, i have recieved complents on how good it smells. i attribute it to the things above, as well as: a. Candles (unlit) just sitting around, the expensive REAL kind b. Suavetel fabric softener (the smell permiates thru my closet!) c. Weekly washing of covers and blankets PS: I smoke, so if I can do, you can do it!!!!! FIERCE_09

Is the rolling brush set too low. This could cause a lot of friction on your roller or the carpet...enough to give off a burning rubber smell.

I hate to tell you this, but it's the dirt you are sucking up making the bag stink!!! It's a new vaccum, so what else do you think it could be? All that yucky dirt is in your carpets!!! Sounds like you need new carpet or at the very least, a throughly good cleaning!
