My family are interested in starting starting a small business such as a coffee house. It is in a area where we shouldn't have to much compition (small town) for a coffee house. What should we exspect? What are the steps?

No competition? That is the best news.

Starting a small coffee shop is a good choice, if there is no "StarBulks" around.

For selling beverage, you will need a special license from your local city or state.

I have publish an article about starting small business in Arizona. You can see what step is required but check out your local authority first.

The most important thing is having a good banker that believes in you on your side. You should incorporate in your state and take advantage of SBA loan programs. Lots of folks will say a business plan is a must, it is a building block that should be addressed especially since it will be a family business (lots of members, lots of different goals)- but it can be a bit overratted. My bank and the SBA just needed a synopsis of our plan, so I sweated a lot of stuff for nothing. Do research, look at properties (lease or buy even build). LLC, S Corp, etc.
