1/2 to 1 hour outside of NYC is not considered "upstate". Those are the burbs. 1/2 to 1 hour North / Northwest of NYC will put you in either Westchester or Rockland counties.
Median home prices are probably around $700K in each county, more or less depending on the town you are in.
