If I would have joined a different branch of the military back in '91, I might have stayed in and would be retiring in 3 years. I re-enlisted for another 6 and 4 more after that maybe I will.
So, in ten years maybe unless I decide to stay in even longer! Don't know yet! In 3 years I'll be 38. That would've been a really nice age to retire!

In all honesty, I think that the working man should never retire; he should only stop worrying. In any profession, I feel their is always a concern about the next paycheck, or how much you can sell a product for. When you feel you are financially situated ( it may be your car, house, and children's college loans are paid off) you could simply begin going to work and looking at it as a hobby rather than a job with out worrying about the wins and losses. I see it as a fresh start.

I can retire at 54, my husband at 58/59 according to my financial advisor.
I've had a Roth IRA since I was 18 and have always put the maximum amount allowed every year. Also have one money market acct. When I married, I got my husband to open a IRA too. 25% of every paycheck my husband and I get monthly are split and deposited into these accounts. Whatever extra money comes our way are put into the accounts too. I have enough in my money market to put three kids through college and still have a considerable sum left.
My parents taught me as a kid to handle money wisely and not to rely on Social Security at retirement.

Well, let's see... I'm 39 years old now. I work at a small, non-union auto dealership with no pension. I have no 401k and no IRA. That means, I'll be depending heavily on Social Security which, as we all know, won't be there by the time I'm retirement age. So it looks like I'll be retiring about the same time I assume room temperature.

I won't give you a plan I'll give you a history. When I was seventeen I was already working in theatre (HS diploma.) I chose to make theatre part time and went to work for a large company. 30 years later I retired from that company and went into theatre full time. 15 years later I retired from full time theatre and started collecting Social security on top of a few other monthly checks.
I doubt that such could be done in today's labor market.

When I win the lottery!!!!- If not, then I'm hoping by 65. But before I retire I want to have the House paid up, be debt free (except for utilities, of course), funeral expenses paid, my financial goals accomplished, my RV and Boat to travel and then I will be all set for enjoying my Golden Years!
