A credit card guarantees payment up to the credit limit. Note you may find that till you return the car most of your credit limit has been "reserved" by the rental company. A debit card will only pay out what is in the account, so you could empty the account before the company makes the charges

So you can be charged for an extra fuel used, mileage, time you kept the car, depending on the rental company's terms.

For instance, many places ask that you return the car with a full tank of 'gas' (petrol) because the tank is full when you rented the car. If you do not return the car with a full tank, then they will charge you for the gas, at higher prices than at a gas station.
So they'll stick it on your credit card, especially if you just leave without paying for the gas in cash.

You can rent cars at smaller individually run places, and they won't necessarily ask for the same things as the big companies, and won't ask for a credit card. You can find where to rent cars in the local yellow pages, and get around it probably.

You don't in every country, I run a car hire firm in Greece and we don't put a deposit on a credit card, only the larger companies (who also charge you double the price for the same car, and they don't have full insurance) We prefer people to pay with cash too!!! I went to the UK at Xmas and I HAD to pay for my hire car with a card which I was furious about and I had the cash ready!!!

use a local reputable firm, you will get a decent car for half the price, AND you wont have to have a credit card.
