A Miata with standard summer tires or all season tires is a real handful in the snow, the previous posters are correct about that. However... if you run 4 snow tires (not 2) when it snows you will find that it's a better than average snow car. The difference is very dramatic, those who haven't driven such a setup in snow are often skeptical but once they do they're astonished at the difference it makes. In my experience (Kansas City area) I haven't found the ground clearance to be much of an issue.

Hi, I had a 95 and it was horrible in the snow. I would strongly advise against ever talking it out in the snow, you'd be asking for trouble. Unless you are willing to put a chain around the wheels or put snow tires ... even then a miata in the snow is generally a bad idea

Even with snow tires, why drive a miata in the snow. If your in Kansas, I bet they use salt when it snows...bad, evil, and wicked to a low driving Miata. Save yourself lots of hardache if you want to drive your Miata to a ripe old age...find yourself a lil fuel sipping 4 banger pickup and drive it during the winter months. Your Miata will get a longer than average life instead of a shortened life due to rust or a wreck.

If you get more than a few inches of snow your going to have problems. Since you live in a snow-zone, I would suggest a 4WD vehicle for winter months, but during the summer the Miata would do just fine, unless you plan on hauling anything.

3 factors could desire to be seen: Tire decision: iciness tires each and each of how around will help.summer time rain tires won't. So opt for a good tire for the circumstances and placed them each and each of how around. (The Miata has such super wheel openings so it is outfitted with chains for real undesirable circumstances) floor clearance, for me it fairly is the biggest postpone (sorry for the shaggy dog tale). The Miata does not take properly to getting used as a snow plow. motive force ability, I even have pushed 60 miles on ice and uncounted miles on snow in my Miata. yet except you have pushed over a million miles, odds are that your ability point isn't equivalent to mine. save the Cavalier for undesirable days. i comprehend the CT highway departments do a good interest of preserving roads open, yet having lived in old Saybrook and worked at web content scattered around up there, there'll be days while it is going to likely be greater useful to break the it then the Miata.

I drove mine in blizzards in Nebraska. If the roads have been plowed, it is not a problem. I used all weather tires.
However when there was a question about the roads, I used a 4 wheel drive.
I don't care what you drive, snow and ice requires caution. A Miata is tricky in these conditions, but not as bad as my FWD SHO was.
Enough said.

It's not a practical winter vehicle, but a lot of fun in the summer. Buy a front wheel or 4 wheel drive vehicle. I think you'll be happier.
