I've used 4 bags of turbo shock and a gallon of algecide, but it's not working. It seems that the filter isn't filtering out the algae. if I sweep it, it looks like the water coming back into the pool is black! The local pool store doesn't know what the problem is...help!

Do you have a water test analysis? You need to get one if you don't, take a sample of water down to your local pool store and have them run a full spectrum analysis on it. Tell them you want tested for Free chlorine, total chlorine, combined chlorine, pH, alkalinity, hardness, cyanuric acid, metals (copper, iron, etc), nitrates and nitrites, and phosphates. When you get these results you can post them back here so we can help you more. You can also email them to me at robandliz1992@yahoo.com for more personalized help.

The other information we need is what type of filter do you have, what is the pool material made of (vinyl, plaster, etc), turn over rate of your pump, any non-standard sanitiation products you use (Frogger, Nature2, ionizers, chlorine generator, etc).

It could be any number of things that are happening with your pool and all of them require different treatments. But the first thing is to know exactly what's happening with your water because everything else will be based on that.

There are a variety of things that could be happening but my first question would be what kind of filter do you have? If it is DE then you need to replace your DE it sounds like. If it is a sand filter you might need to have it opened to see what is up with it. When a sand filter sets for a long period of time it will harden like cement and in order for it to filter properly you have to break it up. Sometimes you ahve to let it operate in a backwash mode for a while then back to normal and then back to backwash....keep doing that every so often just to break it up. How big is the pool? Would be my next question.
Are we talking a home pool or municipal? Perhaps you need a product like "yellow out" which you can get at Leslie's but is a pretty specific algaecide. the final question I would ask is what is the pool chemistry like? If it is way out of Whack then the chemicals you are adding wont work the way they are designed. All of this being said and assuming that you are using a vacum that is through the pools system and not a stand alone unit. Check out your filter to see what kind it is if you have a large pool then check taht you are using an appropriate amount of shock and algecide and finally or rather along with check your pool chemistry to make sure that any chemicals that you are adding will work the way they are supposed to.

Obviously something wrong with the filter. Sounds like you have a high rate sand filter. Make sure the valves are set properly - backwash the sand fully and if that doesn't solve it - have the sand replaced - it may be fused. If Diatomaceous Earth Filter - probably not - then you might have holes in the membrane.

Sounds like you have something hooked up wrong: or the "O" rings in the control unit are bad. I do not understand why your pool place is unable to help you out here. Also your filter could be bad::: i kind of doubt that how ever. Try another Pool supply place.
