Liniment works either by evaporating and thus cooling the skin or by irritating the skin enough to confuse the brain's pain processing system.

In either case, it contains irritants that may be harmful at worst or extremely painful at least if it enters the bloodstream or comes in contact with subcutaneous (below the skin) tissue.

Therefore, never apply liniment on broken skin.
