An American equivalent might be Ellen de Generes – except that Sandi Toksvig seems to me to have more strings to her bow.

As a gay woman, the first thing I think of when I think of Sandi Toksvig is ... she is very funny . The News Quiz has been much better since she took over. I heard an old Clue on BBC7 the other day ... she was excellent.
(oh, and I think you are right ... it usually IS the first thing hetties say).

I know what you mean - when trying to identify a celebrity to someone who doesn't instantly recognise the name you use the most noticable trait of their personality.
e.g. That bald welsh bloke off BBC news.
Let's face it - there aren't really that many lesbians in radio - or women for that matter. To save face, next time try describing ST as that bird who sounds like she's pinching her nose whilst talking very slowly in an over emphatic manner.

Great broadcaster and very funny. The fact that she's lesbian (she also has a daughter) doesn't interest me in the slightest, sorry.
