Everytime I turn the steering wheel to the right, a loud rattling noise comes from the offside (driver's side) front wheel. This only occurs when the wheels are pointing to the right, and not when the steering wheel is turned right to bring the car back to a straight line after steering to the left.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

It means that your suspension needs to be looked at.
If you are mechanically inclined, there is nothing difficult about the components, but after the new pieces are in, it will require a front end allignment.

Most likely it will be your ball joints and/or tie rods.
If the car is over 10 years old, I would replace the bushings also.

A high speed failure can be fatal, to you or to somebody else in the path of the vehicle, so do not put this off any longer than is absolutely necessary.

Again, the jobs are not hard, and doing it yourself or a friend who knows how, will save a LOT of money, but regardless of the money, your safety (and those around you as you drive) does not have a price.

It could be anything. Is it Front wheel drive??????
If so it could be c v j's You must check it or have it checked
Jack it up and see if "anything" is loose, wheel bearings, wheel nuts, steering joints. It is impossible to say. A good mechanic would tell you after he has heard, the rattle. What you describe as a rattle is probably not what I would describe as a rattle It is never any good guessing

If your car is a front wheel drive you may have axle problems. There is a connection called a constant velocity joint that links the axle to the wheels(both front) and over time that joint wears and fails. Often owners do not keep a rubber like boot that covers the joints in good repair. It splits or tears and road grit and grime can get into the joint and cause it to fail too. I have a 95 Avalon and had to have the axels replaced at about $400.00. If the joint fails you are stranded.
