technically yes, but so is almost everything else that modern humans do to pass time...are your friends anal retentive ? if so...that seems more irrational to me...
My dear departed grandmother used to laugh at her own thoughts...just bust out laughing for no apparent reason at all...when we'd ask her "what's so funny grandma?" she'd always reply " Oh nothing", and your "friends" would label her as mentally deficient maybe but she could kick butt at scrabble and make the very best homemade candy you ever tasted... I feel we could use a few more of those kind of mental problems and a few less rational types that can't laugh at themselves for fear of being perceived as having " mental problems" just my opinion....

You mean your friend has a mental problem? I think you're probably right! It's just natural to laugh when we read something humorous. Well, it may be irrational but why should everything in life be rational?

I think that it's perfectly normal. I often fnid myself laughing, crying or feeling anxious right along with the characters in the book. It's a sign of imagination and of good writing.

When your friends laugh at a funny movie, tell them that they appear to have caught your mental problem.

It's the same thing as laughing when your watching a humurous play or watching a sitcom on TV. Why is it different when reading a funny book?

I do this often, a good book is going to grab your imagination. At this point laughing can be involuntary. Your friends are insane.
