We've come along way from Poe's time ... so I wanted to re-ask for him.

Chesterton said it is logical thinking that drives a man crazy. The logical thinker will try to explain everything as deeply as he can but because the universe has so many mysteries he is driven crazy by the fact that he cannot logically cross the ocean of questions.
So I would say yes because I believe intelligence is logic based thinking.

I think there is a good case for geniuses to be diagnosed with a mental disability, but I don't believe the opposite is true.

well studies have shown that madness and intelligence are completely different..i totaly disagree i think madness is the way to see things through in a fake kinda way so that we don't get hurt or crazy, so we think (intelligence)things not relying on reallity but relying on a world we creat in our minds that's why there are many explanations for things.I enjoy madness it is more fun than the real world!!!

Studies have shown no correlation between IQ and madness.
In fact the opposite tens to be true in cases of scizophrenia.
