can you set up a direct debit from a share account at the abbey national?

I would doubt it - as far as I know, Share Accounts have never come with Cheque Books or Debit Cards :-) ... and what happens if there is no free cash ? (do you expect Abbey to sell your shares one at a time ?)

Why not use your Current Account ?

No - you need to use your current account.
