The first thing that I would check would be to see if the CPU fan plugged in first because if the CPU has not enough cooling, considering it fried, turning it into a very expensive paper weight if nothing else. You also have to make sure that the RAM is all the way in with the properly seated in the slot. Another thing that you should also check is if the RAM is actually compatible because if not then the whole computer won't. Check with your Manual to double check. Reinstall the old RAM just to be sure that it was not your motherboard causing the trouble. Before even turning it on though, make sure that no cables are unplugged or show any signs of the insulation being broken because that smell can either be burning wires or your power supply. If the computer works fine after plugging the CPU fan and the old RAM back in, then it's the new RAM that is causing the trouble. Report it to the store of where you bought and they should replace the module or refund your money.

Take the 512 Mb ram to the shop and get it tested. I think some guarantee is there. for replacement.
Keep your hand near the power button.
ON power : Power on: Hard disk lights come up it is ok.
If again smoke , note from where smoke came .
switch off immediately.
You have to test your power supply unit externally

If no smoke
( switch off computer )
Insert one of the 256 MB ram in the slot very carefully.
( not where you inserted the 512 ram board ).
Keep the system cover open.
Switch on and see if KB lights come up or one single beep
is heard, or something appear in the Monitor . OR more smoke comes out !
If something burns again, I am sorry you may have two dud ram boards now.

You have to know what kind of RAM you had because there are SIMM and DIMM and the DIMM must insert in the memory bank in pair(two). So You may check out
