When using a normal tamping bar the muddy dirt forms around the post insead of packing.

Dug the holes yesterday and it rained overnight.

Not sure how the dirt got muddy but know what you are saying. Let it dry out before tamping or bring in some dry dirt.

fence posts should be set onto a bed of about 4 - 7" of gravel. then pack around it with more gravel, pack it with your tamper bar and voila.

what about concrete it? Like quickcrete. That way it would hold u'r posts regardless
