I ran to the same kind of problem. Here is what you can do step by step, and the great thing is its all free.

1) on your computer click on the start button, help and support, and then system restore. Yes creat a system restore point. this is always good just in case you make a mistake. You will always be able to start over and not lose anything.
As a matter of fact I recommend to have 2 system restores from different days all backed up and ready to go

2) goto this web page.
http://www.softwarepatch.com/index.html

3)click on " windows: updates and patches" button on your upper left hand corner and you will
get to the next page which offers all the updates you can possiblily need for all your software for free.

4) if you can not follow steps 2,3, then here is the direct link
http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/index.html
scroll down and under windows xp you see the service pack 2 link,

5) direct link
http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/xpsp2.html
now please read all the instructions and click download.

good luck.

If your version is in fact pirated then you will not be able to install the service pack. This service pack has a "feature" the regularly calls in to the MS servers to verify it's validity. If at any time there is something that is not "right" about your software then you will be locked out of downloading any further patches.

The microsoft provides download of some updates to those users who have bought the licence from microsoft only... so there is no way out other than buying a genuine copy of windows and this is not the place to discuss illegaly using a software ;-)

Look in Microsoft's "knowledge base" for an item about disabling "wga" which is the Windows Genuine Advantage module which comes up at start-up. This may help, if your case is like my neighbor, who had a message, whenever she booted, about "Your copy of Windows is not Genuine, whadya wanna do about it?"

Maybe, then, you can download SP2.

(If yer on a dialup connection, as I was...stoopid me...be prepared...I downloaded SP2 over dialup and...it took 9 hours! Yes yer all chortling, I'm sure)
