Perimeter Formula

P = 2L + 2W

56 = 2(3w + 4) + 2w

56 = 6W + 8 + 2W

56 = 8W + 8

56 - 8 = 8W + 8 - 8

48 = 8W

48/8 = 8W / 8

48 / 8 = W

6 = W

Couple of ways to go about this, let's use basic geometry...

Let l = length
Let w = width

Given
l = 3w+4

The equation for perimeter is 2w+2l

substituting 3w+4 for l we get

perim = 2w+2(3w+4) = 56
=> 2w + 6w + 8 = 56
=> 8w+8 = 56
=> 8w = 48
=> w = 6

go back to the original relationship (l=3w+4)

l = 3(6) + 4
l = 18 + 4
l = 22

w = 6; l = 22

Check the answer

P=2w+2l => 2(6) + 2(22) = 12+44 = 56 (check)

Let x be the width of the garden.
Then the length of the garden is 3x + 4

The perimeter is 2*length + 2*width
That's 2*(3x+4) + 2x
= 6x + 8 + 2x
= 8x + 8
... and we know the perimeter is 56, so we get:

8x + 8 = 56
8x = 48
x = 6

The width of the garden is 6m
The length of the garden is 3*6 + 4 = 22m

Hope that helps!

L = 3w + 4

Perimeter = 2L + 2w = 56
2(3w + 4) + 2w =
6w + 8 + 2w =
8w + 8 =
8 (w + 1) = 56
w + 1 = 56/8 = 7
w = 6
L = 3w + 4 =
3 * 6 + 4 =
18 + 4 = 22

P = 2L + 2W
56 = 2(4+3W) + 2W
56 = 8 + 6W + 2W
48 = 8W
W = 6 m
L = 4 + 3(6) = 22 m

L=3W+4
perimeter=2(L+W)
therefore
56=2(L+W)
=2(3W+4+W)=56
4W+4=28
W=6m
L=3*6 + 4
L=22m

if X = width and Y = length then:

3x+4= y
and
2x+2y=56

x= 6
y=22
