Yes I'm aware that it is an incurable disease. My mother was on oxygen but didn't find it particularly helpful.

I don't know if you could call it "living", because it's more like just EXISTING on a daily basis. The oxygen really doesn't help all that much. I sleep a lot & try to stay out of the sun. For me, the heat seems to make things worse for my breathing. I won't take any of the medications because it will just ruin another part of my body! I have a lot of years left on this earth, so I'd like to keep as much of my original body parts as I possibly can!

Yes, I'm 64 and have Emphysema. But it's is such a gradual thing that I don't need help breathing yet. Had a breathing test the other day. Over a year it has been since the last. And my breathing decrease was 4% worse than it had been. So if I keep smoking it will progressively get worse. I know it's the hardest habit to break and I am going to quit as soon as possible (cold turkey). I wish your Mother the best and my prayers will be with her and you.

My brother has it. Mostly, he has cut way back on activity, and spends most of his time on the computer now.

The best thing that happened with it, is when his first SSI check came with the full amount from his date of filing (about five months in one check). He was able to purchase a "fanny pack" oxygen tank, and he does his own grocery shopping now.

The worst thing is that he now says he has no incentive to stop smoking because he is a walking dead man. He is not depressed about this, simply stubborn.

He lives on his own in a trailer home on private property. I bought him a cell phone (over his objections) so he has instant contact with me, if necessary.

I am retired, and my only obligations are to care for my family members, which I love doing, and when I take 'time off', I hire someone to visit (babysit).

I'm living with it and I'll die with or from it. Damn that last cigarette was good.
