Yes, I'm a dinosaur, who has never had a fake-bake. I'm wanting to tan before my vacation (I leave June 17th), but I work nights, & don't have the time/schedule to get out & walk or roller-blade or the other stuff I usually do to get a 'healthy glow'. So I'm considering this tanning salon up the street---but there are like 5 different options!
Anyone have any advice?!

Actually, the sun is very healthy-- but just like everything else: in moderation!

Go for the regaular tanning bed. Use an accelerator before getting in. Schedule as many as you can before going. Dont do the stand up one, unless you want to be orange and streaky.*

exfoliate your skin before you go, with a loofah or with a "scrubby" type soap. dead skin doesn't tan.

moisturize well and often!! i like palmer's cocoa butter or olive oil lotions. dry skin tans a funny color and is uneven.

don't use an tanning accelerator lotion for the first few visits -- face it, if you don't have a tan, what are you accelerating? Yes, the staff at the tanning place will try to sell you something everytime you go in, but that sale will only benefit them. For your first 3 to 5 visits, all you need is a good moisturizing lotion.

and speaking of accelerators, try a sample before you buy anything! Tanning beds lotions are notoriously expensive, and you don't want to shell out $$$ for a product you haven't even tried!

the other end of the scale is the cheap crap they sell @ Wal-Mart - avoid this at all costs.

do start off small (about 7 minutes for your first visit) and gradually lengthen your time. a burnt butt is no picnic, believe me!

don't forget to change your postion while in the bed or booth - don't want white spots under your arms, ya know.

good luck and happy tanning!!

start out with the lowest wattage of bed. They will give you a quick quiz to determine your skin type. Whatever you do be honest about this, i watch people lie all the time and come out looking like a lobster. They'll probably recommend like 8 minutes to start, and see how you do with that. You'll want to skip a day and go back, if you didn't burn they'll continue to up your minutes each time until you hit the max. Whenever you burn, they'll have to stay at the same level.
The higher level beds are for those who are already tan and would like to be very DARK without spending a lot of time. It costs more, and if u ask me is a rip off...but once you get to that point you only go once a week to maintain your color.

The first time you tan, only go for about 5-7 mins. Then work your way up.
The first time I tanned, the guy stuck me in a turbo booth for 15 minutes. The next day, I looked like a lobster. lol

I tan, and I didn't know there were so many options. I just do the one where you lay down in a bed for 15 to 20 minutes. If they have a stand up one, you might try that one too, because it gives you more of an all around tan. We don't have one of those here, or I would...

the stand up beds dont tan your legs as well as the lay down beds but you can have white wrinkles on your butt and back if you do lay downs. make sure you use lots of lotion. none with glitter. i did the same thing you are i never tanned before and i was using oil of olay lotion and body wash, it left glitter all over my body, so after i tanned i felt like i had little pieces of glass in my skin.im pretty sure that was my problem because everyone else said the itching goes away, mine just got worse. just some advice, good luck !! also use a strong spf like 40 or 50 so you dont burn.

From what I remember, you don't need much. I'd suggest a ten minute session twice a week for a healthy glow, but it's been a while since I tanned in a booth to know for sure. That's what worked for me though.

start in the regular bed laying about seven minutes for three times. Go everyday, move up after the 3rd day to about 9 minutes. After about 2 weeks just start going about twice a week. Good Luck and Happy Tanning!

To begin, only go for about 10 minutes in a regular bed......otherwise you'll end up so burned that you won't be able to go back for a while.

For the first week, do the 10 minutes, like every third day. Then by week two, you should be able to stay the whole time.

They have something called a "bronzing bed" that you'll want to use toward the end to boost your tan..........but it's expensive, mind you.......

Good luck, and have fun on your vacation! = )

If you're short on time, the stand up ones are good. If you would at least like to relax a bit while tanning, the lay down ones are good and gradually work up to twenty minutes otherwise you'll burn and won't want to get back in one before you go on vacation.
