I am going to my new job on Friday and I do not know what to wear. I am a receptionist in a legal office. They said business casual but I still am having problems figuring it out because it is really hot in northern Virginia. In the high 80's. What do I wear that is professional and not sleazy?

When in doubt, call and ask! The HR Manager who hired you should be able to provide you with a dress code. Always be safe rather than sorry!

Check it out on About.com, they have suggestions:

Dressy slacks so you can wear trouser socks instead of pantyhose, and any nice top that doesn't show a lot of cleavage.

I would go this route the first week or so, and if you get in there and find others are more casual, then you can mix it up. For instance, here on the Guilf Coast most people don't get offended by dressy sandals with no hose.

I would sweat it out the first day and wear a more professional outfit. A skirt with pantyhose or slacks with a blouse and of course shoes. Once you are there you can get a feel for the environment and see what is acceptable.

As most people below have said nice blouse and a skirt. But if you aren't into the skirt deal try a elegant pant suit. It tells everyone else you are still feminine but you can do whatever they want you to.

Something like that. It's not boiling hot and nice and airy.

This one you could consider but try pairing it with some bright jewelry or purse so that it doesn't seem like you are overdressing.

For skirts try the one above, remember keep it light and airy. Since it is almost summertime it will work. And it keeps the business tied in while showing your strong feminine side.
Hope that helped

I'm sure your office will have the AC on...so I would recommend a simple skirt blouse, stocking/thigh highs and nice heels....that way when you get to the car later you can just remove your hose. it will also give you a chance to see what others wear around the office.

Heat is not a problem, you'll be in air conditioning. A receptionist is the first person you see so you should be in a nice blouse and skirt. Not too fancy.

Nice slacks or skirt and soft summery blouse. And hot shoes like peak toe pumps!

BETTER OVER DRESSED THEN NOT, JUST DRESS PROFESSIONAL. SIMPLE BLACK AND WHITE. BLACK PUMPS WITH SOME NICE, FIRM, BLACK SLACKS WITH A WHITE BUTTON UP, COLLAR BLOUSE. NOT TOO MUCH MAKE UP, JEWERLY, HAIR SIMPLE STRAIGHT OR UP IN A BUN.
