Natural gas will never run out. Neither will oil, or any other natural resource.

Why is this so? The simple answer is because of economics. When something becomes more scarce, its price rises, and people won't want to buy as much of it.

More importantly, as price rises, previously unprofitable mines/wells/whatever become profitable. Thus, as price goes up, much more of the resource becomes available. Technological advancement has the same effect: as technology advances, previously unexploitable resources become economical to exploit.

The historical trend is for resources to become cheaper and more plentiful with time, and there's no reason to believe that that trend will reverse itself in the foreseeable future.

New natural gas deposits are constantly being discovered. Just last week a massive new field was discovered in China.

There is no way of knowing when or if our natural gas supply will ever run out. Just with the fields that have been discovered since 2001, and assuming a 1.2% annual increase in usage (which is what the rate has been for the last 20 years), we have enough natural gas to last for about 450 years, according to the Natural Gas Institute.

But again, new fields are being discovered on a regular basis, and new technologies are extracting gas from fields that were once believed to be played out.

Natural gas is a natural product of the earth formed by geologic processes. Like oil, it will never run out.
