The American Revolution was radical in the sense that it was the first time that a colony had revolted against its motherland. True, there were wars of independence that took place before, but they were distinct peoples that were seeking to rid themselves of a foreign power. With the colonies, many people, including some that fought on the Colonial side, saw themselves as Britons with rights as British subjects.

Great Britain was at the time a mixture of monarchy and parliamentary government. While Parliament yielded the power, King George III did have significant influence through Tory supporters. Thus it wasn't so much that the American Revolution was about any particular form of government but as one of home-rule. Yes, this did ultimately lead to republican government, but it was one of the people of the states rather than one of a government three thousand miles away.
