The actual speed of connection will vary. I had a 56Kbs modem and NEVER got a 56Kbs connection. When I was lucky, I got 52, most often it was 49, sometimes as low as 32 or even 29 (depending I suppose on how many folks were using the line or what mood the phone company was in or how tired my puny modem was or what day of the week it was or my lucky number or whether George Bush was in office or the price of tea in China...)

Max modem speed (56K) and your download or connection speed will never coincide. 56 kps is the maximum speed of just about all dialup modems. Your actual speed is determined by how far away from your phone company's closest switch, the condition of the line coming into your house, and any corrosion that may have developed where wires are connected to each other.

The missing 4 k is used by the modem to track what it is doing. Only 52 k is available for you to used for downloading. That is the way all modems work. Phones line have two channels in them. The A channel (4 mb) is used to control the connection. The B Channel (the other 52mb) is used for the actual download and unpload.

Intern-t speed depands on the speed of the modem and as well as the speed of phone line. I too get a internet connection speed of 48-52kbps while my modem is supposed to connect ar 56 kbps. Most phone lines have speed that is kept below a certain limit to avoid distortion of data.

It's normal. There's a speed limit built into the phone line so that you don't quite get 56Kbps. Even with brand-new phone lines, 53 is as good as it gets.
Count your blessings that you get 52, though! I used to live in a place where I routinely got 31Kpbs, even though I had a 56K modem. :-(

rarely will you get a 56k connection on a dial up modem.
there are many variables
line quality, wire age (how old is the phone line in your home)
distance from the local phone switch centre.
actually 52k is better than most.
