Because people have been brainwashed by political propoganda that tell them that either it's not happening or people are not at fault. While more than 99.9% of peer reviewed articles on the matter have no doubt that global warming is happening and we are causing it, roughly 50% of non-specialist, laymen mass media articles state that scientists are divided on the issue.
People are amazingly stupid when it comes to incremental dangers. It's the whole frog in slowly boiling water situation. One day, if we don't do anything, people are going to realize that they're fu*cked and it's too late to do anything, because our goose is already cooked.
People are ignorant, and they are proud of it.

Perhaps we will see developments in coastal real estate markets sometime in the near future. I've heard of lots of people moving away from Florida because of hurricanes (and insurance rates). If GW is true and progresses (say, ten years), we can be sure that plenty of folks will move back inland.

The vulnerable areas are not as vulnerable as Big Al and his panic mongers claim. We're talking 1 foot of sea level rise in a few centuries and not 20 feet in 21 years like the true believers claim.

Maybe were not ignorant. But we don't get excited every time the planets doom is predicted. The planet naturally goes through warming and cooling cycles. We just got done with a mini ice age about 80 years ago so of course the planet is warming up. Now if you want to get scared the experts say it can happen again anytime it wants to. Global warming is just something the government dreamed up to pass more taxes and restrictions. Your just falling into there hands believing in and supporting it.

Probably the same reason people didn't want to leave even when they found out hurrican katrina was coming. No one wants to leave their home. Especially if its a nice location.
