Marie Antoinette was executed by guillotine on 16 October 1793 as one of the early victims of the Reign of Terror. Her execution stands out as she had her wrists bound behind her at the prison before the long ride via tumbril. (Most others executed were bound on site and had a more dignified route there, but then her Austrian heritage worked against her.) It has been said that among her last words were an apology to her executioner for accidentally stepping on his foot.
