Breathing is one of the most important and most “instant” of all the vital functions of the body and the very existence of our physical body in the environment requires several
“interactions” and “exchanges”: such as exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the atmosphere and the body through breathing.

The body builds up the carbon dioxide so that there will be a lower concentration of it outside the body and will initiate diffusion but in a more forceful manner. The body needs to get rid of the carbon dioxide so that more oxygen can be breathed in and used for metabolism.

Carbon dioxide is waste product of metabolism and all waste products kill so the body will always try to get rid of the bulk of it but never all.

Carbon dioxide is a product of ATP metabolism and if it builds up, it reduces the overall oxygen content and affects the efficiency of ATP metabolism. If we don't get rid of CO2 from our body we will become more and more sluggish until our cellular metabolism cannot even support the cell.

actually, most of the carbon dioxide in our body is carried as bicarbonate (HCO3). First CO2 and water in the extracellular fluid react to form carbonic acid (H2CO3) which then splits into bicarbonate (HCO3-) and hydrogen ions H+. A rise in H+ concentration will decrease the pH and a fall in H+ will increase the pH. Our cells have a very small range of pH at which they tolerate. The body regulates pH by controlling the rate at which CO2 is expelled. I took human body this last semester... and we talked A LOT about the importance of this. Hope it helps!

Outside of the cells, CO2 turns into carbonic acid. If our blood changes pH too much we will go into shock and die.

It's a waste product. Too much in you and you die
