Lord people are so DENSE. Don't worry about the negatives people say, they don't have a clue what they are talking about!
I had my son in Mommy Babby swim classes from 6 months til he was about 3. He LOVED every minute of it! They play games and sing songs and get baby acclemated to the water. We did things like the itsy bitsy spider and when the rain comes down you sprinkle water on their head. Eventually you have the option of dunking your baby, I chose to dunk my son and it was just fine for him. As they get older they learn beginning swimming skills, like when my son was around 2 or 2 1/2 he learned how to float on his back and jump into my arms from the side of the pool I haven't put my daughter (9 months) in classes yet simply because we just haven't had time yet, but we will for sure soon!
Oh, and the place we took our class at keeps the water temp at 92 degrees, which feels like bath water VERY nice :-)
It's a fun way to interact with your baby and take your bond to the next level :-)

Babies love water, they find it really relaxing and gives them freedom. Make sure you get a good swim suit/nappy that doesn't swell up when they swim. No realy need for transition as they are already used to water every day in the bath.

I think it is a fantastic idea for you to swim with your baby, but to take actual lessons at this age wouldn't work. No 6 month old would have the attention span for a lesson with an instructor and wouldn't be learning how to swim anyway. They sell an awesome inflatable swimmy thing for infants (sounds vague, but you'll see exactly what I'm talking about once you are at the store) at the pool supply section of Target. Have fun!!!

My brother has finished this way with all 3 of his childrens. the 1st one became into 6 months and the different 2 have been closer to a twelve months. From what i stated it appeared like a brilliant oppurtunity to get the youngster acquainted with water and to not be afraid. all of them love the water now and swimming is their sought after element, so its unlike this adventure scarred them. some human beings could think of its cruel yet as quickly as I watched it not one of the babies have been screaming or crying, they have been startled yet they quickly have been given over that.

It is very common to enroll your baby in swimming classes. My mother enrolled me in swimming classes as a baby. Although I cannot remember, my mother told me that I really enjoyed it. A lot of people do this and I have heard that babies enjoy it. I swim really well today too........

Most kids love it! That's why most YWCAs or YMCAs offers "Mommy and Me" swim classes. It's never too early to teach them to not be afraid of the water, and little kids are fearless. =)
I'd go to a local Y for the classes - their pools are often heated and kinda bathtub-ish.

Lots of people do this. Don't worry about transition to water - babies LOVE it (if it's warm enough). Just wash up and use good moisturizer afterwards - chlorine is harsh on their skin.
I just put my baby in the water in a small innertube (that has crotch/seat support) - he LOVES it, as did his sister when she was a baby.

my oldest was in a swimming class at 6 months. i really found it was a waste of time and money. everything they did there, i could do at bath time, so i didn't enroll my youngest.
