Nobody knows....
The combination of the mysterious suitcase is "666", the "number of the beast".[6]. Whenever asked, director Tarantino has replied that there is no explanation for the case's contents: it is simply a MacGuffin. Originally, the case was to contain the diamonds stolen in Reservoir Dogs, but this was seen as too mundane. For filming purposes, the briefcase contained an orange light bulb, silver foil, and a battery. Despite Tarantino's explanation, many theories have been proposed for the contents of the briefcase. Among these is the idea that Marcellus Wallace sold his soul to the devil, and the suitcase contains this soul. Claimed evidence for this include the fact that Marcellus has foggy, dead eyes and a band-aid over the back of his head (where the devil sucked out his spirit). Also, many small details point to the fact that the kids in the Big Kahuna Burger scene were supernatural henchmen of the devil, including the fact that none of them bled or showed any wounds when shot, and the fact that none of their bullets hit Jules or Vincent (Jules later claimed that this was the intervention of God, which fits with the theory). Finally, the fact that the suitcase glows and its combination is the number of the beast support the idea

It's a flashlight. :) On the special edition of the Pulp Fiction DVD, there is a running "video commentary" (a la Pop Up Video from VH1 in the 90s). All of these theories (gold, soul, stuff from other movies) are explored. The "official" answer is -- who knows, who cares -- it's a McGuffin (google that-- it was Hitchcock's term for an item that everyone wants in a movie but the viewer doesn't know why everyone wants it, and it doesn't matter, we just care about it because everyone does). The "soul" thing was developed by Q's fans based on the clues in the movie, including the Band-Aid. But, according to the DVD popups, the Band-Aid was not in the original script; it's there because Ving R. had a scratch, or zit, or some other flaw that day, and the production people thought it would be too distracting, so they just put a Band-Aid over it! "666" just works because M.W. is so evil. The bullet-stopping thing isn't real of course--the "hand cannon" guy was just such a bad shot, so nervous, and not supporting the gun, that he just missd. Nonetheless, I like the "soul" argument, because it makes the movie slightly more meaningful and coherent.

They never actually show what was in the suitcase. Chances are it was either money to make a deal with, but that is unlikely since they blew them all away, or it was drugs.

...rather than recycle the same answer I've used since first encountering this question (i.e., my breakdown of the suspected 'soul of Mercelis Wallace' theory), I'm inclined to say that the reason for this movie's unexplained subplot, is to garnish perpetually obvious 'water cooler' conspiracy theory talk, which has apparently sustained itself years later since the film's release.

Folks!!! This HAS to be the most, if not one of the most asked questions on Yahoo! Answers!!!

Hey, Quentin Tarantino!!! If you're intent was to perplex and manipulate your audience in this way....uh, it has worked!!!!

I have actually heard that it was supposed to be Marcellus Wallace's soul. If you notice, he has a Band-Aid at the back of his head near his neck throughout the movie, supposedly to signify that his soul had been taken by, presumably Satan, who is purported to take souls out of the back of one's head. This is all possibly another urban myth, though.

My vote is for diamonds. I've heard an argument for Marcellus Wallace's soul, but I don't buy it. I don't think Tarantino has actually told anyone, so here's what you know:

It glows. Its beautiful enough to make two-bit criminals forget to keep their butts covered. And there was no way it was leaving Julius' hands.
