I know how the process is done, but back then, how long did it take? If someone could answer this, I would greatly appreciate it.

Those lucky enough to survive the process took very long to heal. Many died from the process or from infection following the procedure.

Well, basically, back then, amputees would just sort of have a bandaged bloody stump for a while, and in time it would heal over, sometimes an infection would get in and kill them, but sometimes it would heal over without infection, and then the amputees either just wheeled around in wheelchairs (if it was their leg) or wore long sleeved shirts with one sleeve pinned up (if it was an arm). They did have veterans' hospitals back then, where amputees would go to recover when they were first wounded. If you've ever seen Gone With the Wind, there's a scene where Scarlett's working in one of those vet hospitals as a volunteer nurse, and there's a pretty gruesome scene where a dude has to get his leg cut off due to gangrene. That's pretty much how it was.

Once a limb was amputated, amputee had very good chance succumbing from the infection. However, there were some effective methods of speeding up the healing process. One of the method was to use the maggots. As they would eat away the dead skin, it was surprisingly effective in cleaning up the wound. The use of maggot is actually returning in some hispitals in trial basis. Another method was to cover the wound with fat. It was fairly effective, depending on the source of fat.

Despite all this, at least amputees had chance to recover. If you were shot in the stomach or any area within the body cavity, it was akin to death sentence. Very few, if anyone survived gutshot.
