Unless you are taking the pill then you should always use a condom. You can even get pregnant, although it is rare, after having unprotected sex whilst on a period. This is because fertlisation does not take place immediately after sex. The sperms have to travel up the fallopian tube to reach the ovaries. This can take several days so conception always takes place between one and five days after sex.

Whatever you do, if you wish to avoid pregnancy, do not practice the Catholic 'Rhythm Method' or withdrawal. The first is notoriously unreliable and just produces more catholics and the second is dependent on the male knowing when seminal, liquid is about to be released. This can sometimes be before ejaculation. This happens during intense arousal or when the vaginal walls are dry and the penis allows an escape to provide lubrication.

Someone needs to pass out a "myths about avoiding pregnancy" pamphlet to young people. You need to ALWAYS you at least one form of ACTUAL **contraception when having sex. Two forms would actually be better. Just because you have your period on a certain day, does not mean you are safe from pregnancy on specific days. Women can ovulate at varying times month to month. Some women have even been know to get pregnant while on their periods.

** the pull out "method" is not an actual method of preventing pregnancy. Just thought I'd throw that one out there.
Woman on top, is also not a pregnancy prevention method(saw that one today)

I agree with the others - DON'T skip the use of a condom. Besides, because the condom decreases the male sensation somewhat, it could take him longer to "get there", and make the experience for both more enjoyable.
