The bank might not verify the funds over the phone. Perhaps you have to visit in person, show them the cheque. If he has automatic deposit of paycheques, hit them first thing in the morning after payday.

I assume you mean, you want to deposit the cheque in your account in your bank, but worry it may bounce when it finally gets to his bank?

In Canada, you can do this: go to a branch of his bank, present the cheque, and ask to make it a certified cheque; this will cost a few dollars. The money is taken out of his account at that time. Then you can deposit the cheque in your bank and it can't bounce.

I assume American banks allow the same sort of service.

Call you bank and speak to someone in your branch that can confirm that you have a bank account with them. Tell them that you need to verify funds for a check you are depositing. The check will have the account #/routing # on it and you should have all the client's information necessary....assuming there is a DL# on the check. However, the best way to verify is to take it to a bank and try to cash it. They will verify funds before cashing it. Some banks may be suspicious that you are trying to commit some kind of identity fraud if you just call it in.

Because of privacy laws some banks now require you to present the check before they will verify the funds. Try calling first of course, best of luck to you.

call the bank and ask for a verification of funds - they should be able to tell you if the check is good or not.
