When I turn on the hot water at my kitchen sink and then turn the cold on too much, the faucet shuts off and I have to turn it off and try again. Do I need to just go buy a new faucet? It is kinda old.

Sounds like you have the old stem style faucet which is a good thing when it comes time to repair. Turn the water off and drain the line. Remove hot water handle then remove hot water stem. If you look at the bottom there will be a bibb washer there. It's probably worn out and loose. Take the stem with you to the hardware and buy a couple of new ones. May as well get the o-rings that fit up towards the top also, only a few cents more. Replace washer and o-ring and replace stem. Since you've got the water shut off and all the tools sitting right there, do the cold water side also.

The only moving parts in a faucet are the stems. You may have a bad washer on one stem. You can either buy a new faucet or turn off the water supply and remove the handles and stems to locate the problem.

Is it a single-lever control? It souns like the cartridge has gone bad.

You can either replace the whole faucet, or dismantle the handle and replace the cartridge, which is available at lowes or home depot.
