I mean when someone says that someone else is placing a person on a pedestal. What does that mean? Does that mean they expect them to be perfect or they are showing them off?

It means they admire that person. That person stands above all others in their eyes.

I always thought it was a good thing. When I said that I was doing that, I meant that I wanted to place them above all else and everyone else. I didn't believe the person was perfect or needed to be perfect, I just thought highly enough of them to raise them above the crowd.

In my case though, the girl who I had placed on a pedestal did not want to be placed higher than everyone else and did not like it. She wanted me to treat her like everyone else - not special.

Placing her on a pedestal would be placing her above himself and others. It signifies having very high regard and high expectations for her.

A bit of both they are placing the person as a worshiped object that can do no wrong and they usually end up shocked when they find they had it all wrong.~~
