Seriously! I know, you're going to tear me apart... I know they're not there now. But the U20 batch of guys has been competing well, MLS is improving... how far out are they?

It'll be another dozen+ years.

The Americans need to learn how to score goals consistently in international competition (aside from piling on goals against Central American countries.) The Americans can produce good goalkeepers and defensemen so far, but there needs to be at least one more strong generation of soccer players after the current U20 crowd before the U.S. starts actually earning their strangely high international ranking.

It may also take the "importation" of a good international player or two to light a spark on the national side. America being a country mostly of immigrants, it's not that strange to see athletes born in other countries end up competing in international events for the U.S. With the best young American athletes usually being snapped up by other sports, it may require the infusion of some internationally-raised players who lived and breathed their whole lives to take the U.S. side to the next level.

Although the US has made great strides since "coming onto the scene" in 1990, they still have a way to go with their attack. The US has yet to produce a world class striker at the international level, and this is what it's going to take to move to the next level. Just look at the number of goals the US scored in the 2006 WC....1! It's a shame that McBride didn't spend the majority of his career in the EPL as he has shown some good form even while climbing up in age.

I think that there is hope. Jozy Altidore looks to be the real deal and making some waves in the MLS at age 17. Hopefully EJ can continue his form and gain some consistency up top.

2010 won't be their year, but 2014 could be interesting for the US.

Not a silly question at all. They made it to the quarter-finals in 2002, and played a very competative game against Germany in that round, losing 1-0, and with a little controversy around that. 2006 was disappointing, clearly, but even so they played a great game against eventual champions Italy, earning a 1-1 draw. Bottom line, they are far from being the best team in the world right now, but it's not impossible that they could put things together leading up to 2010 and at least make a credible run at it.

Still pretty far in my eyes...and I blame the US Soccer Association....
If you look at all the friendlies they have played, its normally not the top notch teams in the world...
And now that they decided to send their A squad to the Gold Cup and whatever to the Copa America....thats just telling me they just want to lie to the American public that Soccer in America is improving when in reality they are in stalemate...
They need to start facing tougher competition because thats the only way they are going to improve and learn to get better....

Winning the world cup or even getting far requires to have some luck .... the last World Cup that I recall that truly had possible favourites in the Final was the 1990 World Cup between Argentina and W. Germany.....

I agree with what play maker said. They are far from the Best team in the world but they are improving. Beckhams move to LA Galaxy is going to promote football even further in the USA.
Hope fully NOW Americans will get interested in it
as a neutral i very much doubt that they will win the 2010 world cup but they can have a good shot at it.

UNITED STATES have qualified for the World Cup in recent times but the team will never be the major contenders for the tournament.

NEVER!
The U.S. is too busy with the top 3 sports.
Football, Baseball and Basketball.

They do not invest enough in young soccer players like other countries do. You don't even hear about other sports in Mexico, Italy or Europe compared to that of soccer.

Soccer is king!
