I would NOT advise buying one from a pet shop, since most(not all, but most, and that DOES include large chain pet stores especially) know little about the animals they sell and are highly prone to giving bad advice on how to care for them, or will try to sell you unnecessary things to go with them in order to make a buck. The best source would be a person who breeds snakes, and there are a LOT. You can arrange to have the snake shipped to you, or, better yet, if you live in an area where there are reptile shows, visit one and pick out your own pet from the many that will be available from several vendors. Talking face-to-face with experienced owners sure beats listening to some clerk in a pet store rattle off some pre-prepared sales pitch. The sites below have a classifieds section, plus listings of many different breeders, and the first one will have a section for "Events" at the top, where you can find out if there are any shows to be held in your area. The third site is a wholesale reptile dealer that sells to the public; their prices are a bit high(especially for shipping) but they have always had healthy animals, and they know a lot about them so they can answer your questions about any specific snake.

Great question, for starters I would suggest a corn snake grows to usually 3-4 feet or a ball python (if your from UK then Royal python) which grows to 4-6 feet. Corn snakes at the most will feed on jumbo mice, and for Royal/Ball python about a small adult rat. The advantages of owning a snake are being a part of the herp world. other advantages are no smell, feed once a week, no allergic reaction. Many other advantages. I cant think of any disadvantages. To keep a snake all you really need is a tank, can be anything as long as the tank is roomy, the ideal size for corn snake is 20-30 gallons, and for a ball/royal python about 40-60 gallons. To have a better interaction with you snake (and if you have the time) make your own snake. Then it means something to you. For adults for both feed 1 mice or rat once a week. Snakes aren't pets that need a lot of work. You can handle them as much as you want, or none at all. They dont poop much, since you feed them once a week. I sugest you buy a book about a royal/ball python so that you know a lot about them before you get one.

Another great place to go is a reptile show! I love buying from breeders there, plus you can learn so much. The prices are usually really reasonable, too. May I suggest you get a ball python, sand boa, hognose, or corn snake. These are all great for beginners. My favoprite reptile forum is www.repticzone.com, but if you are interested in finding a reptile show/expo near you, you can go to http://www.kingsnake.com/events.html.

Look for a reputable breeder, please do not buy from a pet store, they are often unhealthy and sickly. A breeder will be better prepared to educate you, and answer any questions.

Try and find some forums online about snakes, then read what they have to say about reputable breeders, that's where I would start.

Good luck!

Give a homeless snake a new home, that might otherwise be euthenized. Check out Petfinder.com.
