There is no UK law stating the age at which a child can be left at home alone. However, parents can be prosecuted for wilful neglect if they leave a child alone or unsupervised "in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering or injury to health" (Children and Young Persons Act 1933). Your neighbour may be having difficulties finding childcare. Perhaps the family is isolated and lacks the support of relatives and friends? As a neighbour, could you offer help with contacting local support services or with childcare? See People to talk to for organisations that offer childcare advice.

Looks like it's going to be wilful neglect then

What possible good could come from jetting across Europe to visit the Pope just he can tell them he's praying for them? And why does the Pope not do this for ALL parents of ALL missing and abducted children? What makes this case so special? It's a simple case of child neglect, for which the grieving parents should be prosecuted instead of blatantly exploiting the situation for their own profile. -RKO- 05/30/07

Yes we know they can be done for wilful neglect, but this happened in Portugal and not the UK. The McCanns know they have everyone over a barrel, that is why they are laughing at us all.
