The disposal how been working. This is a weekend place. I always turn on water first then flip switch before putting anything in it. When I flipped on the switch it hummed for a second or so & then nothing twice in a row; so I didn't put anything in it. I checked that it was plugged in under the sink & that plug-ins work properly. I also found what I think is the re-set button; it didn't help.

Can the grinding blade get froze up? Is it possible there's a wire loose in the wall switch? I need to fix this myself without curling my hair! Thanks much for all suggestions.

The motor can stick, or lock up from lack of use. You'll have to manually break the blades free with a wrench. Once you have the blades freed, it should run again.

Bobbie, The best thing is to turn off the circuit breaker or pull or unscrew the fuse in the fusebox (if it's an old house). New houses have circuit breakers. They should all be labeled. If not, plug a radio into the outlet in question, and turn it up. Go to the breaker box, and start trying breakers. When you get to the right one, the music will stop. Also - don't bet your life on the one in a zillion chance that the radio coincidentally fried at that exact moment. Check the outlet by plugging in something else like a lamp that just worked somewhere else. When in doubt about how to work with electricity, it's best to call a friend that is very familiar or hire an electrician, but a garbage disposal shouldn't be much of a mystery. -Kevin Amen to that other answer. Never, ever, no matter what the electricity is doing, on, off or whatever, never stick your hand in the disposal. They can come back on, they can be stuck and get unstuck, and loose wires that seemed disconnected can suddenly and mysteriously start conducting if they are touching but you thought they weren't because they don't seem to be working.

Some disposals come with a wrench, usually attached to the motor. Use that to see if you can turn the motor manually. There is a place the wrench fits into on the bottom of the motor. Make sure the switch is OFF before you try this. There is also a reset button on the underside of the motor. Once the jam is clear you may have to press the button to get the disposal to operate.

I recently called a maintenance man for the same reason. He showed me that something was causing an obstruction. He turned off the power of the disposal, took an extra long screwdriver and used it to turn the blades in a counter-clockwise direction. This seemed to unjar the obstruction.

Turn the power back on, run the water, and flip the switch. Keep trying to do this until the obstruction clears.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Sounds like some thing is jammed under the movable cutting blades. The rubber cover can be poped out and removed, then shine a flashlight to see if you can see anything. Next, take a toilet plunger and using the wooden handle try to turn the blades clockwise. If they will turn and you have reset it ( red button overload) you have a bigger problem that may take a service call; but, you don't need a plumber for this , get a handyman

Turn off the power. Look on the bottom of the unit and you should see a hole for an allen wrench. This is to allow you to turn the blades manually and unclog them. Turn it back and forth until freed up.

the motor runs but the grinding plate does not move. I tried the wrench which turned at the bottom but the grinder did not move.
