homeostasis:
The ability or tendency of an organism or cell to maintain internal equilibrium by adjusting its physiological processes.

If the environment remains relatively stable no adjustments are required. The farther the environment departs from ideal the more difficult it is for the organism to adjust, until, finally, the ability to adjust becomes overtaxed, and the organism cannot return to an equilibrium state.
