I know.
When you say hockey, of course you mean the hockey played on ice.
If it's another form of the game, then use the word floor, table, air, field, street, video, etc.
Those who say "ice hockey" don't say "grass soccer", yet soccer can be played in other forms (indoor, for instance).

As a Canadian i would say it IS THE hockey and other types need to qualify their name by putting field, ball, street, and roller in front of the name. But the second most populated country in the world, India, comes into this site and reads the hockey section to mean "Field" which is their national sport.
This is an international site, and only one hockey section. Trying to be worldly so people know what I am talking about, I would add ice if the question was ambiguous. It happens a lot in this section. Like who is your favorite hockey player, and you have a list of half for ice and half for field. One thing that would help is a separate field hockey category. The ice hockey tends to rule the board and demand to be heard, but there are a billion of them out there that could change things the other way some day.

People call it, "Ice hockey" because the game is on ice. Other kinds of hockey are Field hockey and Street hockey. I for one play street hockey or maybe field hockey; don't know the difference!

chuck makes a good point.
the bottom line is that all other forms of "hockey" ... are variations of the original (and best) form. which is the game played on ice. so hockey implies ice. the other ones need a descriptor in front of the word "hockey" to differentiate it from the original to explain what surface it's played on, or how it's played. (i.e. field, street, and roller)
we shouldn't have to say ice hockey. that's just redundancy for the ignorant.

They call it ice hockey because it is played on ice... Street hockey is played in the street, thus it is called street hockey. It makes logical sense.

Because some there's floor hockey, street hockey, field hockey (yes some people do count that as hockey). Just like some people call it "american football"

Good question. It is actually an American thing. I never hear Canadians call it "ice" hockey, they just call it hockey and assume that it is on ice.
Kind of like Americans call it a tuna fish sandwich. I just call it a tuna sandwich and assume (hope) that it's fish.

Talk to somebody about hockey where they don't play ice hockey... they'll think you're talking about field hockey.

Because they're idiots. Hockey is the original, and implies ice. If you play a different form, then you specify- Yes, even here in the southeast US.

Well the reason is that ice hockey is the original and all of the others are variations...
but since we are on the topic, I don't think anyone mentioned knob hockey yet. :)
