The Civil War had less devastating effects on the North than the South. The reason is simple: most of the combat of the Civil War occurred on Southern soil. A civil war affects all portions of the society in which it takes place and its civilians. There were also no cannon factories in the whole South. So the South was at a disadvantage.

There was clearly more then just two reasons why things turned out the way they did. The overall biggest reason simply was because the Northern States had superior industrial capabilities. When you combine that with a larger railroad system to move thier supplies faster and logistically support thier force better, it was only a matter of time before they would overtake the Confederacy. Manpower played an issue as well. Overall populations were in favor of the Nothern States. The Confederacy had superior leadership from a Military stand point and they also had a stronger esprit de corp as a result of that. This explains why the Confederacy was able to have inital success the first few years of the war. There are many misconceptions about the U.S. Civil war and the biggest one being this whole issue was about slavery, and that is a farce. The issue which lead to the firing on Ft. Sumter and the beginning of armed conflict was States Rights vs. Federal Laws. Slavery was the undercurrent which provoked the conflict of the State Laws against Federal Laws. It could have been a tax, it could have been a draft, it could have been the time you are supposed to set a clock to, the point here is what sparked the whole war in the first place was a law put out by the Federal Goverment against a law made by a State, which one would apply? The southern states said a States laws could supercede the federal ones, and the Northern States said Federal Law is the highest law in the land, and the rest is history.

The north was set up with factories to produce good, which included munitions, clothing. etc. The south had always shipped raw cotton, the king of their crops, north for production., Also, the north simply outlasted the South and though a half million Americans died out of the 31 million Americans at that time, the south just simply got eventually drawn and quartered physically and regionally by several northern generals and more soldiers, many of whom were former slaves themselves who fought for the north..

The North won because they had alot more resources and a much larger population than the South. Also they controled most of the railroads.

I hate doing others homework, however, "infrastructure" would be another answer. The North had far better roads, bridges, and railroads in which to move supplies much more quickly than did the South. Cheers.

manpower - obviously the North had more men to send to batter because the Northern States were more industrialized than the Southern States who were agriculture based in their economics.

industrialization - the Northern States could manufacture the weapons, clothing, etc. needed to equip their army easier than the Southern States who had very little manufacturing facilities in comparison.
