I think its possible but not with the system we have now.
Instead of having psychologists actually determine the causes of crime and try to develop criminals into socially acceptable citizens and to remove the need to commit crimes once out....we just round them up into prisons that are like feudal caste systems. When inmates leave they don't know how to exist outside of prison and many strive to get back in or only know one thing...crime past of which they learned in court.

A few weeks ago I watched a recent interview with David Berkowitz (Son of Sam serial killer) and according to the interview he's a "model prisoner" now and has found religion, spends most of his time reading the Bible and offering religious counseling to other inmates. It was actually quite fascinating to see him so...normal considering he murdered a bunch of people because he thought a dog was commanding him to.

So judging from a 5 or 10 minute interview, there seemed to be a chance he has rehabilitated. Does that mean he should re-enter society? I really don't think so. He needs (and probably will) spend the rest of his life in prison. It was just nice to see that the guy seemed to have changed for the better.

So to answer your question, I really don't think a hardcore criminal can ever be fully rehabilitated. It's in their nature to be dishonest and deceitful. Whether it's a genetic thing or a product of their upbringing is beyond me. But if, for example, a theif managed to turn his life around and start fresh, as soon as he encountered obstacles in his new life he would be tempted to go back to his old way of making ends meet.

Almost always NO! Look at the prisons. There are lots of repeat offenders.

This is especially true with sex offenders. They can't be rehabilitated. There is a very high rate that they will do it again!

No. I belie eve some people are just beyond reaching. Something inside them is missing, like a feeling of empathy. These people who commit truly heinous crimes should be locked away forever. The people who are rotting away doing 25 to life for possession of a drug should be released into community corrections and given treatment for their addictions.

It's possible, but not probable.

Even if he were to forsake his ways and become a Christian, it would be a long hard road of transforming mind and spirit. Not that I don't believe it could be done. It would take a miracle to break a hardened criminal. I believe in miracles.

As a Christian, I believe anyone can reform. It is possible, although not probable. Its individual choice. And choices have consequences.
