13 is not an unlucky number. Friday the 13th got it's reputation for being an unlucky day because that it day the King of France rounded up the Knights Templar. There are number of theories as to why 13 is unlucky but none very convincing. For example 13 is unlucky because Judas was the 13th person to sit at the last supper or because man can count to 12 with his eight fingers, two thumbs, and two feet and since thirteen is beyond the twelve and represents the unknown it is unlucky.

No, it isn't unlucky.

The only reason why people say that it is unlucky is because the Knights Templar were captured and sentenced to death and interrogated on Friday the 13th.

The only other explanation is because you need 13 people to have a witches coven...which of course was a taboo when the churches were burning them on the stakes.

Numbers are neutral, so none is really lucky or unlucky. If 13 to base 10 bothers you, change it to base 8. It is then 15.

E.W. Bullinger writes:

"As to the significance of thirteen, all are aware that it has come down to us as a number of ill-omen. Many superstitions cluster around it, and various explanations are current concerning them. "Unfortunately, those who go backwards to find a reason seldom go back far enough. The popular explanations do not, so far as we are aware, go further back than the Apostles. But we must go back to the first occurrence of the number thirteen in order to discover the key to its significance. It occurs first in Gen. xiv. 4, where we read 'Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and the thirteenth year they REBELLED.' "Hence every occurrence of the number thirteen, and likewise of every multiple of it, stamps that with which it stands in connection with rebellion, apostasy, defection, corruption, disintegration, revolution, or some kindred idea." (Bullinger, E.W. Number in Scripture, Kregel Publications, (c)1967, p. 205).
