It is horrible people act like pets are throw-away items, and yet the price to pay is 2 months and a 1,000 dollar fine. It SUCKS out loud.

Knowledge is power. A single person cannot save the world, but you can do your part. Unfortunately there are too many people out there just dont care. The greatest thing you can do is become a part of a shelter or rehab center where you can teach young people that come in already interested in animals. You can raise your children to care and they will teach their children.

We will never see the end of this in our lifetime, but we can hope that with the difference we make, that it wont be more than a few generations away.

I do my part by working at a highly educated pet store. I talk with people every day on how to properly care and feed their pets, even if they already have them. It doesnt matter to me. If I notice someone picking up a box of marshalls ferret food, I kindly introduce myself and recommend a better ferret food and why. Or if someone mentions they have only one or that they have such and such cage, I tell them they are much happier in a large cage and with companions. These are only examples.

I also never buy from pet stores. I have 3 ferrets, 2 rats, and a cat and all are rescued and adopted. When I introduce anyone to my pets or if Im merely talking about them, I proudly talk about adopting them and always recommend it.

Spay and neuter is a major belief you should spread. Many people want to breed cute puppies or kittens but are usually turned off when you start talking to them about extensive vet bills, hand feeding if the mother rejects the young, finding homes for them, how if done properly a person may be lucky to break even - there is no profit in breeding. Its all about education and taking the time to talk to people.

I try to do my part every day. Educate yourself on facts and know your sources. People are more likely to listen to you if you have something to back up your claims. The more knowledge you have, the more power you have to educate others.

This is the best we can do. If enough people do a small part, someday we will make a difference as a whole.

yeah it does suck they really do need to do more about animal cruelty these days I work for a vet so I see it all the time its very sad. Actualy yesterday a couple brought in a little shitzu puppy about 4 months old all wet from the rain and very sick from being wet and cold and had no food for awhile. They found the people who owned the puppy and they said well he started getting sick so we threw him outta the house and we dont want him back!. That puppy could have died if those people did not find him and thank god they paid the bill for him and want to keep him and give him a good home to live in. I always pay money to the aspca and wwf the more people who donate money evey month the more it will help these animals so anyone reading this should join one of these groups even if all u can send it 5 or 10 bucks it still helps.

You are absolutely right. When it comes to animal abuse and neglect, the punishment just doesn't fit the crime. It sucks out louder for all those abused and neglected animals whose owners remain uncaught.

To answer your question; there are many things that can be done to help save animals from cruelty.

1. Urge everyone you know, even those you don't, to get their pets spayed and neutered.

2. Get people to sign a petition, asking the government to pass and enforce stricter penalties for animal cruelty and neglect.

3. Get a law passed that requires people to get a renewable license in order to own a pet. I know this might sound a bit drastic to some, but think about it for a moment. Ownership of a pet is a responsibility, like driving a car. We are required to get a licence to prove that we are capable of driving. Why not require that people prove they are physically, mentally, and financially capable of taking proper care of a pet before they actually get one?

4. Set legal limits on the number of pets a person can have.

5. If you ever witness anyone abusing or neglecting an animal, do not hesitate to kick their ***; I mean report their ***!

There are many things that we can do to save animals from people who don't deserve them. These re just a few of many.

One final thing; Give yourself a pat on the back for being such a kind and caring person. The world and animals need more people like you!

Hi Isabel,
An animal's neglect and pain is the thing that pulls the hardest on my heart. I hate any sort of animal cruelty. I have too much admiration for them as intelligent beings, that we as people underestimate far too much due to our ignorance.

I believe to be able to assess a person's character, is to check out how they treat their pets. The best thing for a human being to develop 'heart' is to love and care for animals.

There are many organisations you can get involved in. In australia, the RSPCA is always needing donations of time, help and fundraising. PETA is doing some good things, but be careful of their extremism and political angst.

I have always had animals around me and recently came into pet duck ownership. I have learned so much about these birds and have started a rescue/re-homing facility to help them out. They are more intelligent than many humans I've known ( ; ]~ ) and are highly misunderstood creatures and suffer a lot at the hands of man. Have a look at my site: DuckRescue_Domestics_Illawarra/
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DuckRescue_Domestics_Illawarra/

My personal view is that the evolutionary belief of 'survival of the fittest' has given humans the ability to kill and maim any time they like. My alternative view is that God created you, me, all things - called them 'good' and gave us the responsibility to love and look after ALL the earth.

Doesn't that sound better?

Like anything else kids learn from their elders.

One of my friend's father didn't want the family dog anymore and dumped him out on the street at least 50 miles away from home.

I was amazed to find the dog in our yard, our dog was his mother.

He came by and picked up the dog, I guess he had a change of heart cause he kept him for a while then he found him a home instead of tossing him on the street again.

Many places sell pets without a thought to people who really shouldn't have pets...even the humane society doesn't check up on the peole who adopt pets from them ....even though the contract states they have the right too they just never do...too much effort for them I guess. breeders who really care about the pets they bred will go to great lengths to make sure ther animals go to good homes and often check up on them but it is rare these days.

I love animals too, and i think you should start working at a pound, help with fundraisers for animal shelter(s) and maybe adopt some for yourself. if you see a stray, check if it has any id and try to return it to it's owner, and feed any animal you can come across that looks starving! have fun!
