I agree with other guy. It sounds like one of your switches is sticking, or a short is in the wiring harness. Some cars do that if the key is in the ignition. Make sure the key is removed and try to lock it. For a temp. fix, pull the pwr lock relay, and lock it manually. If that doesn't work, perform an exorcism!

I have a 323i, year 2000.

Mine did something similar about 4 and a half years after I bought it, right after it went off warranty. I would be driving along, suddenly all the doors would lock or unlock. Randomly, the dash indicator would flash that a door or 2 was open.

They traced it down to a bad controller module - I think it's behind the glove box. I think that set me back about $1000, including a few hours of diagnostic testing by the dealership.

If you're lucky, it's the switch. If not - well, those darned Germans get richer...

(PS. Other problems - reverse died on my transmission last year - $5000 for a new one - they wanted to charge me $8000 but I yelled. The rear window traces are corroding - a known problem in BMW and Mini - so the AM antenna's reception is AWFUL and gets very hissy when the rear defogger is on. A new rear window is $600 if I decide to fix it)
