The best unit will be one that is new and sized correctly.

A used unit will cost too much to run.

Take the total square feet in the room. (Dimension X Dimension)

Take this number and divide it by 1.2

Divide this number by 400. This will give you how many "tons" of air conditioning you need. Purchase that size unit but consider where you will plug the unit in. If you are going to just use a normal plug make sure the unit is 120V.

You've gotten some really great answers, I just wanted to add that I had the power company come out and do a free audit and they told me exactly what I needed.

Also, just a note, if you're looking into an air conditioning company, don't use big companies like Trane, all their maintenance people are paid on commission. Get a local mom and pop shop to take care of your needs, they want repeat customers. Always stay with the repair person that is servicing your home. Most are honest, hardworking people, but I worked for a company where there were a few bad apples.

Go to some place like home depot or Lowes. Even Wal Mart. Look for the energy star symbol. I bought a LG last year, ran 2 air conditioners in my house and my bill didn't go up much at all.

The optimum AC size (BTUs) depends on several factors.

- square footage of the room to be cooled
- which floor the bedroom is on
- number of windows in the room
- does the room have exterior walls facing south
- average outside temperature

There are several websites that have a formula for air conditioning sizing.

any window air conditioner should be enough to cool a med size bedroom. most dont have an energy guide label though. you can talk to someone at a home improvement store for energy consumption or the manufacturers website.

i lived in az, for 3 yrs. the best solution i found to save $$$$$$$$$ was to insulate the mr. br. & put an appropreate size window a/c in. the window. window was too large so i cut a hole in the wall close enough to a wall outlet , caution!! be sure if you do that you dont cut any wires. this saved me many$$$$$$$$
