When do I need to register my business? How much profit can I accumulate or how long can I be in business before doing this? What are the repercussions or benefits if I do not register?

No, you can run a sole proprietorship without registering it, depending upon the type of business (a consulting business, for example). However, I recommend incorporating and registering right away. If you do work for state agencies, for example (like I do), the state will require that you're a registered company. Check with your accountant as to whether you should be an LLC, s-Corp, etc.

You have to get an occupational license and Tax numbers from the city and state. If you have people working for you, you will also need a Fed. ID Tax #.
